About
Yuliya Krupnik is a Ukrainian-born visual artist based in Palo Alto, California. Working across painting, photography, and film, she approaches image-making as a way of constructing worlds rather than representing them. Her current painting practice explores the relationships between color, form, perception, and psychological experience, questioning whether harmony can emerge from coexistence without conformity.
Her paintings bring together biomorphic forms, geometric structures, and intricate patterns within shifting visual spaces. Color shapes these environments, altering spatial relationships and influencing perception. Her fascination with unexpected color combinations is informed in part by childhood memories of Ukraine during the Soviet Union's collapse, when an influx of Western visual culture introduced vivid neon and saturated colors into a previously restrained visual landscape. Krupnik approaches each painting as a puzzle without a predetermined solution. The composition develops through an ongoing exchange between its elements.
The complexities and fragmentation of the human psyche remain a recurring source of curiosity. Contradictory thoughts, emotions, and perceptions can coexist, finding parallels in the independent yet interconnected elements of her paintings. Rather than offering fixed interpretations, Krupnik sees abstraction as an invitation for viewers to enter into a conversation with themselves, bringing their own memories, perceptions, and experiences to the work.
Krupnik holds a BA in Psychology from San Francisco State University.
